    Good SEO Is Good GEO — And Here's Where It Gets Complicated

    "Good SEO is good GEO" is one of the most common framings in the generative engine optimization space — and it's mostly true, which makes it genuinely useful as a starting point. The content quality, technical hygiene, and E-E-A-T signals that have driven good SEO for a decade are largely the same signals that drive AI citation performance.

    But mostly true is not entirely true. Several important signals diverge sharply between SEO and GEO. Understanding exactly where the overlap ends — and what GEO requires that SEO never needed — is the difference between a content strategy that performs in both environments and one that quietly underperforms in AI search despite ranking well on Google.

    The Google E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) was designed for human raters evaluating content quality.
